June 2008 Tidbits:
GUN SAFETY
(Asking Saves Kids) Campaign Is there a gun where your child plays? Over 40% of
homes with children have a gun, and many of those guns are left unlocked or
loaded.
Just talking to your child about the dangers of firearms is not enough. Children
are naturally curious. If a gun is accessible in someone's home, there is a good
chance a child will find it and play with it.
So...ASK if there is a gun before sending your child over to play.
If the answer is NO...that's one less thing you have to worry about.
If the answer is YES...You have to determine if your child's safety is at risk.
Guns should be kept in a gun safe with the ammunition locked separately or they
pose a real risk to your child. Hiding guns is not enough. There are countless
tragic stories of kids finding guns that parents thought were well hidden or
safely stored. If you have any doubts about the safety of someone's home, you
should politely invite the children to play at your house instead.
HOME SAFETY
The Homes Safety Council wants your home to be safe. Did you know that each year
nearly 21 million family members suffer injuries in the home that could have
been prevented?
Check out the following in YOUR home!
Falls prevention- Use bright lights at top and bottom of stairs, grab bars in
showers and tubs; use a non-slip mat in the tub; wipe up spills promptly, keep
stairs free of clutter and use baby gates for babies and toddlers.
Fire and Burn prevention- Check water heater setting- make sure its no more than
120 degrees F; install smoke alarms in every level of your home; test each smoke
alarm monthly; make sure and adult is in room where candle is lit.
Poisoning prevention- Know the poison control toll free number- 1-899-222-1222;
store any cleaning or automotive products that say “Caution”, “Warning” or
“Danger” on label away from food in locked cabinets & install child locks on
such cabinets.
MEN'S HEALTH
Men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death and are the
victims of 92% of workplace deaths.
Testosterone is linked to elevations of LDL, the bad cholesterol and declines in
HDL, the good cholesterol.
Men have fewer infection-fighting T-cells and are thought to have weaker immune
systems than women.
Depression in men is undiagnosed contributing to the fact that men are 4 X as
likely to commit suicide.
Women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examination and
preventive services than men. (Information available from the CDC.)
